  • Visit from Tianjin Chin Woo, China

    Chin Woo NZ has received a surprise visit from the Secretary General of Tianjin Chinwoo, Mr. Ren Guang Hua, accompanied by an assemble of Executives from the Tianjin Tourism Bureau as part of their fact founding tour and promotion of Tianjin as a new tourist destination to the Oceania region.

    This visit to the Oceania region by the group is to promote tourism for overseas visitors to include the recently completed “Huo Yuan Jia Memorial Museum & Resort” ahead of the 12th World Chin Woo Festival & Tournament upcoming in mid October this year.

    These special guests were hosted at the Sun World Chinese Restaurant in Auckland on 22/04 by Chin Woo NZ’s Vice-Chairman Mr. Jack Chan and Head Coach Mr. Coach Guo. Gifts & Associations’ pennants were exchanged. Even though the visit was brief but relationship between Chin Woo NZ & Tianjin are further cemented.

    20Twelve is shaping up to be a busy year for Chin Woo New Zealand. In addition to the very successful annual tournament in Auckland later this year, our biennial magazine and a host of international competitions and invites, there are Open Days, Movie & Pizza Nights and Banquet Dinners planned throughout this year.

    Make sure you get your annual membership renewal in as soon as possible to take advantage of these events (where Chin Woo membership gains you a subsidised entry). Membership only costs $20.00 a year or $200 for a lifetime membership. New membership and renewal membership forms can be downloaded.

    Interviews with Sifu Melissa Fung and Madam Shi Mei Lin

    Recently, Wellington instructors Sifu Melissa Fung and Madam Shi Mei Lin were interviewed by Chinese newspaper Homevoice for International Womens Day.
    Sifu Fung, who has made New Zealand her home for the past 25 years, teaches Hung Gar and Hap Gar kung fu. Sifu Fung began learning traditional Chinese martial arts in Guangzhou in 1962 under Master Deng Gum To. A traditional Wushu champion during the 1970s and early 1980s, she was the gold medallist in the ‘Southern Fist’ category at the All China Traditional Martial Arts competition in 1980. In the years to follow she instructed classes for her teacher and was a qualified judge and trainer for the Guangdong Wushu Federation. Sifu Fung is one of two Technical Director’s for Chin Woo NZ.     Sifu Melissa Fung - Home Voice

    Madam Shi Mei Lin has also made New Zealand her home for many years and specialises in Wushu and Wu Family Tai Chi. She is the adopted grand daughter of of Wu Yinghua and Ma Yueliang. She has been an international Tai Chi champion and five times an All China National Tai Chi Champion. She has toured with Chinese Wushu teams internationally, including the United States in 1974 when she was part of an elite Chinese Martial Arts Delegation that also included Jet Li (Li Lianjie). Madam Shi Mei Lin has presented and taught at many Chin Woo NZ events over the years; for more information on her and her school visit http://www.wutaichi.org.nz.

  • Chin Woo Wellington Meetup

    Chin Woo Wellington Meetup

    A Chin Woo Wellington meetup will take place on Saturday 7th April (Easter Saturday)- 12pm at Level 1, 45 Courtenay Place.

    We’ll be planning and organising Chinese martial arts activities for the Wellington region.

    Chin Woo have received numerous calls and messages asking for an update on Peter’s condition.

    We are happy to say that his operation last week went very well and he is now making good progress towards his recovery.

    Our thoughts and well wishes are with our Chairman, Sifu Peter Yu, his wife Shirley and his family and students. Peter is currently receiving treatment in Wellington Hospital for a spine injury brought on by a motor vehicle accident. Our sincere hope is that he makes a full and fast recovery.
